Theatrical Releases:

Elio (Wide Release): The latest movie from Pixar – following last year’s blockbuster sequel Inside Out 2 – is an original sci-fi adventure. It centres around Elio (Yonas Kibreab), a lonely, grieving kid who gets his wish to be abducted by aliens, where he is mistaken as the ambassador of Earth, and befriends the oddly cute, worm-like Glordon (Remy Edgerly). It’s often very funny, but also offers an honest and emotional exploration of loneliness and what it’s like to feel out of place in the world. This is the sort of charming, entertaining, heartfelt storytelling we want from Pixar, and I hope audiences will show up to support it. If you’ve got kids, this is a great all-ages choice, too. 28 Years Later (Wide Release): Danny Boyle returns to the zombie genre with this legacy sequel to his 2002 film 28 Days Later and its 2007 followup 28 Weeks Later. This is set nearly three decades after the initial outbreak of the “rage virus,” and focuses on a new group of people trying to survive. The ensemble cast includes the likes of Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell and Ralph Fiennes. I haven’t had the chance to screen it yet, but the film is receiving critical acclaim. I’ve also been a fan of Boyle’s work and aesthetic over the years, so I’m excited to see what he cooked up with this shot-on-iPhones horror movie.
