Paramount Pictures has just put out the first trailer for Roofman, starring Channing Tatum in the true story of an escaped convict hiding out in a Toys “R” Us. At least the way the trailer sells it, it looks like the story has been turned into a quirky crime comedy. Kirsten Dunst, Peter Dinklage and LaKeith Stanfield also star.
The film comes to us from director Derek Cianfrance, who is best known for heavy indie dramas Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines. This is his first movie since The Light Between Oceans in 2016. From this first glimpse at least, Roofman looks much different in tone than Cianfrance’s earlier films; much broader, more comedic and, well, commercial.
I’m guessing this one gets a glitzy premiere at TIFF, but whether it becomes an awards contender after that is another question. The film opens in theatres on October 10th, the full trailer is below.
