New releases for the week of July 4th, 2025.
Theatrical Releases:
Jurassic World Rebirth (Wide Release): This seventh film in the blockbuster dinosaur franchise arrives 32 years after Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park, and ten years after the franchise was rebooted with Jurassic World. This soft relaunch is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), and features a whole new cast of characters led by Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali. These sequels have never reached the heights of Spielberg’s original, and Rebirth is uneven (it has a subplot with a family that doesn’t fully work). But it’s well-shot at least, and features some suspenseful set-pieces. (Full Review)
Sorry, Baby (Limited Release): Writer-director-star Eva Victor’s feature directorial debut earned raves at Sundance, and is shaping up to be one of the most acclaimed indie films of the year. Victor’s film offers an engaging, tonally unique portrait of trauma and its aftermath, with their screenplay deftly balancing elements of comedy and drama. I saw it last week, and it’s a film that continues to resonate after watching it. (Full Review)
40 Acres (Limited Release): This Canadian post-apocalyptic survival thriller arrives in theatres after premiering at TIFF last year. Danielle Deadwyler stars as the matriarch of a family trying to survive and protect her farm in the wake of a second Civil War, that has made farmland the planet’s most valuable resource. It’s a well-crafted thriller from first time feature director R.T. Thorne. (Full Review)
