New releases for the week of July 18th, 2025.
Theatrical Releases:
Eddington (Wide Release): The fourth film from writer-director Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar, Beau is Afraid) is a blistering political satire turned neo-Western set in May of 2020. Joaquin Phoenix stars as a small town sheriff in New Mexico, who ends up in a standoff against the mayor (Pedro Pascal) over mask mandates. This is Aster using his unique sensibilities to explore the absurdities, hypocrisies, and terrifying realities of 2020. It’s the sort of intentionally divisive work that won’t be for everyone, but I was a fan (and so is Martin Scorsese). (Full Review)
I Know What You Did Last Summer (Wide Release): This latest entry in the slasher movie franchise serves as both legacy sequel and reboot. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Geller and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprise their roles from the 1997 original, alongside a new cast of characters being stalked by a killer with a hook after covering up a car accident. Reviews haven’t been very good so far, but hardcore fans will likely still want to check it out.
