First Trailer for James L. Brooks’ Ella McCay

By John Corrado

20th Century Studios has just put out the first trailer and poster for Ella McCay. This is the new dramedy from writer-director James L. Brooks, his first since How Do You Know in 2009. I’m obviously a big fan of Brooks’ classics like Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News and As Good As It Gets, so I’m hoping this is a return to form for him or at least a fitting swan song.

Emma Mackey stars in the titular role of Ella McCay, a young lawyer who becomes Governor of her state, while dealing with her messy family life. The film has an all-star cast; Jamie Lee Curtis is her supportive aunt, Woody Harrelson is her estranged father. Jack Lowden, Ayo Edebiri, Rebecca Hall, Kumail Nanjiani and Albert Brooks round out the ensemble.

They all look to be doing solid work, in a film that seems to mix elements of romantic comedy, family drama, and political satire. I’m hopeful it delivers the goods. The film opens exclusively in theatres on December 12th, the full trailer is embedded below.
