New releases for the week of September 26th, 2025.

Theatrical Releases:
One Battle After Another (Wide Release): There are an abundance of new releases this week, with the buzziest of them all being Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The early buzz on this one is deafening, with it already being lauded as a major Oscar player across the board. I would expect no less from PTA. It’s also a big budget gamble from Warner Bros., with it being given the widest release of the director’s career. (Full Review)
Eleanor the Great (Limited Release): Scarlett Johansson makes her directorial debut with this dramedy that gives a leading role to June Squibb, now in her mid-nineties. The story didn’t entirely work for me, and it struggles to find the right tonal balance for pretty heavy thematic material, but Johansson does a decent job of directing it and Squibb is very good. Playing at TIFF Lightbox. (TIFF 2025 Review)
The Baltimorons (Limited Release): Jay Duplass directs this tender and funny chance encounter romance set on Christmas Eve in Baltimore, following a struggling improv comic (Michael Strassner, also a co-writer) and an older dentist (Liz Larsen). I’m a sucker for Christmas movies and these types of character-driven films, so I really enjoyed this one. It’s pretty wonderful. Playing at TIFF Lightbox. (Full Review)
Dead of Winter (Limited Release): Emma Thompson stars in this Minnesota-set survival thriller, doing her best impression of Frances McDormand in Fargo. It’s a decent and suspenseful little film that is mainly worth seeing for her committed performance. (Full Review)
Out Standing (Limited Release): Quebec filmmaker Mélanie Charbonneau directs this biopic of Sandra Perron (played by Nina Kiri), who became Canada’s first female infantry officer. It’s a pretty good docudrama, carried by a solid performance from Kiri. (TIFF 2025 Review)
Peak Everything (Limited Release): This Quebec romantic comedy from director Anne Émond opens in limited release after playing as the closing night film at TIFF. It’s pretty good and has some enjoyable character beats, but can feel overstuffed and thematically tries to do too much with its “climate disaster” backdrop. Playing at TIFF Lightbox.
More Releases: Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie (Wide), The Strangers – Chapter 2 (Wide), The Lost Bus (Limited), Bau: Artist at War (Limited), Plainclothes (Limited)
