Disney has just put out the first teaser trailer (and poster) for their upcoming live action remake of Moana. The studio continuing with the live action updates isn’t shocking, especially after the massive success of Lilo & Stitch earlier this year. But this one is arriving barely a decade after the animated film, and less than two years after the massive box office success of its sequel Moana 2…
Catherine Laga’aia takes over the role of Moana, with the teaser set to her rendition of “How Far I’ll Go,” while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is reprising his role as demigod Maui from the animated films. We get a glimpse of him from behind in the trailer, but don’t see his face. This looks…fine? But so much of it is clearly visual effects anyway, and it appears to hue closely to the animated film in every other way.
I’m getting How to Train Your Dragon live-action vibes from this, which I actually thought was pretty good. The film opens exclusively in theatres on July 10th, 2026, and it’s pretty safe to say that this is going to be a massive hit over the summer.
