New This Week (11/21/2025): Wicked: For Good, Rental Family, & More!

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of November 21st, 2025.

Theatrical Releases:

Wicked: For Good (Wide Release): The most anticipated of this week’s new releases is Act Two of director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway musical. I really liked this one. It delivers a darker and emotionally resonant grand finale to the saga of Elphaba and Glinda, guided once again by the incredible performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The first Wicked became a box office sensation this time last year, and judging by the packed house and number of people dressed up at the early access fan screening the other night, I expect this one to be no different. Rental Family (Wide Release): Brendan Fraser stars as an American actor living in Japan in this dramedy from writer-director Hikari. The premise finds Fraser’s character joining an agency that rents him out to play different roles in real people’s lives, a culturally fascinating concept that really exists in Japan. I saw this one at TIFF (after waiting several hours in a rush line for the premiere), and found it to be quite enjoyable and touching. The film mainly works thanks to Fraser’s completely warm and genuine presence at the centre of it. (TIFF 2025 Review)

Little Amélie or the Character of Rain (Limited Release): This lovely animated film is based on a semi-autobiographical book by author Amélie Nothomb, and follows a Belgian toddler named Amélie who is being raised in Japan. I reviewed this one during TIFF, and found it to be a magical viewing experience. It has shades of Miyazaki, letting us view the world through the eyes of a young child. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto. (TIFF 2025 Review)

More Releases: Sisu: Road to Revenge (Wide), Left-Handed Girl (Limited)

Train Dreams (Netflix), Champagne Problems (Netflix), One Shot with Ed Sheeran (Netflix), After the Hunt (Prime Video)
