New This Week (01/16/2026): Dead Man’s Wire, Charlie the Wonderdog, All You Need is Kill, & More!

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of January 16th, 2026.

Dacre Mongomery and Bill Skarsgård in Dead Man’s Wire

Theatrical Releases:

Dead Man’s Wire (Limited Release): Gus Van Sant’s based-on-true-events crime drama tells the story of the tense standoff that unfolded when Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård) took a mortgage broker (Dacre Montgomery) hostage in 1977 with a shotgun strapped to his neck, and the media frenzy that ensued. I was somewhat mixed on this one when I saw it at TIFF, but it showcases some entertaining performances and has a ’70s throwback vibe. (TIFF 2025 Review)

Charlie the Wonderdog (Wide Release): This animated flick stars Owen Wilson as the voice of the titular “wonderdog,” who gains superpowers after an alien abduction, much to the delight of his young owner Danny (Dawson Littman). The story is pretty basic, but Wilson brings his usual laid-back charm to the role, and there are some sweet moments between the dog and his boy. This one is geared towards younger viewers, and as far as January releases go, it’s fine for kids. (Full Review)

All You Need is Kill (Wide Release): This anime adaptation of Japanese author Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s graphic novel, which already provided the basis for the 2014 Tom Cruise vehicle Edge of Tomorrow, plays out like a sci-fi alien attack version of Groundhog Day, following soldiers caught in a time loop. It’s an entertaining, briskly paced retelling, with vibrant animated action. (Full Review)
