4K Ultra HD Review: Wicked: For Good

By John Corrado

Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good, the second act of the director’s two-part adaptation of the Broadway musical, is now available on physical media, including 4K Ultra HD.

I was a fan of this one when I saw it in theatres (you can read my full review right here). Even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the first film, it serves as a fitting and emotionally satisfying conclusion to the story. The film in large part works thanks to the performances of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively.

They are the heart and soul of these films, delivering powerful performances especially in the last act. Furthermore, this is a dazzling production, with Chu and the production team putting a lot of effort into it. The 4K presentation is a treat to watch, allowing us to see the detailing on the elaborate sets, makeup, and costumes, backed up by an array of bonus features. It’s highly recommended for fans of the film.

Film Rating: ½ (out of 4)

Bonus Features (4K Ultra HD):

The 4K disc includes both the theatrical and single-along versions of the film, along with around eighty minutes of bonus material. A regular Blu-ray is also included in the package, which ships with a shiny slipcover.

• Deleted Scenes (Play All – 5 minutes, 51 seconds)

  • Brick Making (1 minute, 24 seconds)
  • Glinda Train Tour (1 minutes, 17 seconds)
  • Friendship Montage (2 minutes, 10 seconds)
  • The Wizard is Sentimental (58 seconds)

Making Wicked: For Good (51 minutes, 28 seconds): The centrepiece of the bonus features is this in-depth behind the scenes look. At just under an hour, it takes us through various aspects of the choreography, production design, two new songs, story beats, and Grande and Erivo’s emotional performances as they say goodbye to these characters.

• The True Wizard (5 minutes, 56 seconds): Chu talks about getting to adapt the musical for the big screen, his approach to the material, and shooting both movies back-to-back.

• More Than Just a Place (6 minutes, 26 seconds): Looks at Erivo’s new number “No Place Like Home,” written by Stephen Schwarz.

The Girl in the Bubble (6 minutes, 6 seconds): Looks at Grande’s new number “The Girl and the Bubble,” and how they choreographed and filmed it to look like a single take using mirrors and an carefully designed set.

Kiamo Ko (6 minutes, 8 seconds): Looks at the visual design of the “castle in the sky” where Elphaba takes refuge.

• Feature Commentary with Director Jon M. Chu
