Theatrical Releases:

Hoppers (Wide Release): This latest film from Pixar follows Mabel (Piper Curda), a young animal lover who “hops” her consciousness into a robotic beaver to infiltrate the Animal Kingdom, and stop the development plans of Mayor Jerry (Jon Hamm). I’m already on record as a big fan of this one. Directed by We Bare Bears creator Daniel Chong, Hoppers is zany and very funny, but also has that trademark Pixar heart. Plus, it’s got the studio’s best Rotten Tomatoes score since Coco in 2017, and is poised to have a solid opening weekend at the box office for an original. And with the surefire hit of Toy Story 5 coming this summer, it feels like Pixar is fully back (not that they ever really left). (Full Review)

The Bride! (Wide Release): Maggie Gyllenhaal follows up her Oscar-nominated directorial debut The Lost Daughter with this ambitious remake (?) of The Bride of Frankenstein. Jessie Buckley (who is a week away from winning her Oscar for Hamnet) stars as the titular Bride, while Christian Bale is the monster Frank. I haven’t seen this one yet, but the reviews have been so divisive and all over the place, that I’m curious to see Gyllenhaal’s big swing for myself.

Protector (Wide Release): This B-movie action flick stars Milla Jovovich as an ex-military war hero trying to save her teenaged daughter (Isabel Myers) from human traffickers. It feels like a cheap, low-rent Taken ripoff, but Jovovich does do decent work in the Liam Neeson role, including the multitude of bone-crunching action scenes. (Full Review)
