Theatrical Releases:

Undertone (Wide Release): This horror movie debut from Toronto-based filmmaker Ian Tuason became a Canadian success story when A24 picked it up at last year’s Fantasia in Montreal. It’s a creepy, slow-burn horror film that stars Nina Kiri as a paranormal podcast host presented with a series of ten disturbing recordings. It’s mainly worth seeing in a theatre for the eery, unsettling sound design, which provides most of the scares. (Full Review)

Space Cadet (Limited Release): This wonderful Canadian animated film serves as the directorial debut of DJ Kid Koala. It charts the bond between a young astronaut and her guardian robot, unfolding entirely without dialogue. The film has shades of Chaplin-esque silent comedy, while also having a real tenderness and poignancy to it, and some lovely uses of music. It’s one that can be enjoyed by any age, too. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto. (Full Review)
