By John Corrado

New releases for the week of April 19th, 2024.

Sasquatch Sunset

Theatrical Releases:

Sasquatch Sunset (Limited Release): This unique and ambitious indie dramedy from the Zellner Brothers unfolds without dialogue and follows a family of sasquatches (played by Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough, Nathan Zellner, and Christophe Zajac-Denek) in the wild. It plays like a mix of bizarre nature mockumentary, gross out comedy, and oddly meditative reflection on our relationship to the natural world, with fully committed performances by the cast, who are practically unrecognizable under the impressive makeup and prosthetics. (Full Review)

Irena’s Vow (Limited Release): This World War II drama from Canadian director Louise Archambault dramatizes the inspiring true story of Irena Gut Opdyke (Sophie Nélisse), a Polish nurse who helped shelter a group of Jewish workers at the home of a Nazi commandant (Dougray Scott). It’s a poignant and moving story that is well-acted and well-told, and is especially important in our current climate. (Full Review)

The Beast (Limited Release): French filmmaker Bertrand Bonello’s latest is a sweeping romantic drama starring Léa Seydoux and George MacKay as lovers reconnecting and being torn apart across moments in time, set in a future ruled by AI where feelings are routinely wiped. It’s an ambitious, swing for the fences type of film that might not quite all work, but it has enough powerful moments to stick with you. (Full Review)

Streaming Releases:

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver (Netflix), Which Brings Me to You (Paramount+), The Beekeeper (Prime Video), Hey, Viktor! (Digital/VOD)
