New releases for the week of May 24th, 2024.

Theatrical Releases:

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Wide Release): George Miller follows up his Oscar-winning 2015 action masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road with this prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of Charlize Theron’s Furiosa. I just saw this in IMAX. It’s a different beast than the extended chase movie of Fury Road, but a ride that is thrilling in its own right as it fleshes out the mythology behind these characters and leads right into the 2015 film. The visually stunning action sequences are once again the standout, especially on a massive screen. (Review coming soon!)

The Garfield Movie (Wide Release): As someone who was a pretty big fan of the Garfield comics as a kid, I enjoyed this animated adventure featuring the titular orange cat (now voiced by Chris Pratt). It’s amusing and also has a surprising amount of heart in its absentee dad storyline, with a heist plot that finds Garfield reuniting with his street cat father Vic (Samuel L. Jackson). Most of the reviews aren’t great, but I’m not sure what others were expecting; it feels like a Garfield movie. (Full Review)

Hit Man (Limited Release): Richard Linklater’s latest is a romantic action comedy that finds him reuniting with his Everybody Wants Some!! star Glen Powell. The actor stars as a police informer who starts falling for a prospective client (Adria Arjona). It’s a piece of smart and sexy entertainment that serves as an incredible acting showcase for Powell, who is still on a hot streak from recent rom-com hit Anybody But You. It’s receiving a limited run in theatres before hitting Netflix in a few weeks, but try to see it with a crowd. (TIFF 2023 Review)

Babes (Limited Release): This pregnancy comedy from first time director Pamela Adlon explores the bond between Eden (Ilana Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau), and how their friendship changes when the former becomes pregnant with her first child after the latter has just had her second. It’s very funny with a number of sharp observations, and delivers those heartfelt moments as well. (Full Review)

More Releases: Sight (Limited), Wilfred Buck (Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema)

The Beach Boys (Disney+), Atlas (Netflix), The Blue Angels (Prime Video)
