Below are two new releases from Universal Home Entertainment. Both good choices for those of all ages, these films would make great gifts for Christmas and the upcoming holidays.
Despicable Me: Today this Summer’s breakout animated hit, Despicable Me, is being released on DVD & Blu-ray. With an excellent voice cast, and an army of endlessly appealing yellow minions, this is one very much worth seeing. We reviewed Despicable Me when it opened in theatres on July 9th, all considering it a ton of fun for everyone. Our consensus was:
“Featuring a great use of 3D, and an excellent all-star voice cast, Despicable Me is alternatively sweet and hilarious, providing a ton of cartoon fun for people of all ages. ***1/4 (Out of 4)”
The DVD includes commentary with directors Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin, as well as 3 featurettes. Perhaps most anticipated of the special features are three all new mini-movies featuring everyone’s favourite Minions, but these are unfortunately exclusive to the special edition.
Despicable Me is 88 minutes and rated PG.
Nanny McPhee Returns: Today Universal is also releasing Emma Thompson’s family movie Nanny McPhee Returns on Blu-ray & DVD. This follow up to the surprisingly charming 2005 family film, features an excellent cast and is one worth seeing. We reviewed the sequel when it opened in theatres on August 20th, all suitably charmed by the film. Our consensus was:
“With an excellent British cast, Nanny McPhee Returns is a charming family film as well as a sweet period piece. A delight for those of all ages, this is one of the best family films of the year. ***1/4 (Out of 4)”
The Blu-ray includes a commentary track with director Susanna White, deleted scenes, and featurettes.
Nanny McPhee Returns is 108 minutes and rated G.
