DVD/Blu-ray Release: End of Watch
Today, VVS Films is releasing the found footage thriller End of Watch on Blu-ray & DVD. The film follows Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña), two tough South Central Los Angeles cops who end up in the middle of a dangerous drug ring, all under the watchful gaze of their personal cameras.
Although End of Watch was a critical success, the film didn’t quite work for me when I first reviewed it during TIFF, as I took issue with some of the violent set pieces and confusing camerawork. But after a more levelheaded second viewing, I’m actually recommending the intense film on Blu-ray for the solid performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña and Anna Kendrick. The believable scenes of dialogue give us genuine insight into the characters, leading up to a surprisingly affective twist right after the big finale that works quite well the second time around.
The Blu-ray includes commentary with writer and director David Ayer, several featurettes and 47 minutes of deleted scenes.
End of Watch is 108 minutes and rated 18A.
