Blu-ray Release: Better Call Saul: Season One

By John Corrado

Better Call Saul Blu-rayThis week, Sony Pictures is releasing the complete first season of Better Call Saul on Blu-ray.  Playing as a prequel to Breaking Bad, the series follows struggling lawyer James McGill (Bob Odenkirk) on his rocky, morally ambiguous ascension into notorious legal legend Saul Goodman, along with his reclusive brother Chuck (Michael McKean) and retired cop Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks).

For a spinoff to one of the most acclaimed series of all time, Better Call Saul is quite successful in its own right, setting up a compelling piece of backstory and striking a perfectly balanced tone that mixes genuine suspense with darkly absurd humour, often recalling the Coen Brothers.

Bob Odenkirk delivers a gripping and incredibly watchable performance as the fascinatingly flawed but still almost eternally optimistic title lawyer, who isn’t above stretching the law in order to find legal work, keeping us thoroughly hooked throughout all of the twists and compelling character development.  Featuring all ten episodes, this set comes highly recommended for both fans and newcomers, just make sure you have time to binge watch if you haven’t already seen it, because there are a lot of cliffhangers here.

The Blu-ray set also includes audio commentaries, deleted scenes and multiple other featurettes.

Better Call Saul: Season One is 470 minutes and rated PG.
