Blu-ray Release: The Martian: Extended Edition

June 8, 2016

By John Corrado

The Martian Extended Edition Blu-rayArriving just five months after the initial Blu-ray release, The Martian: Extended Edition is now available.  This new version of Ridley Scott’s excellent space adventure includes both the theatrical and extended cuts of the seven time Oscar-nominated film starring Matt Damon, boasting an extra ten minutes of added footage and scenes, as well over two hours of brand new bonus features.

At this point, I’ve already stated on multiple occasions that I’m a huge fan of The Martian, so the film itself deserves my highest recommendation.  Anyone who already purchased the first release will have to decide if they want to double dip, but this new edition is worth getting for completists or those who never got a copy of the film in the first place.  My original review can be found right here.

The bonus features include commentary tracks with Ridley Scott, screenwriter Drew Goddard and author Andy Weir on both versions of the film, deleted scenes, a gag reel and multiple featurettes, as well as a look at the science behind the film and a panel discussion with NASA scientists about the possibilities and logistics of an actual manned mission to Mars.  This is a solid set overall that provides a lot of worthwhile material for both science buffs and fans of the film to watch through.

The Martian: Extended Edition is a 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment release.  The theatrical version is 141 minutes and the extended cut is 151 minutes, both are rated PG.
