Blu-ray Review: The Light Between Oceans

January 24, 2017

By John Corrado

the-light-between-oceans-blu-rayAfter returning from the war, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) decides to live a life of solitude as a lighthouse keeper.  Then he falls in love with Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander), and she moves to the island with him.  When they find a dead man and a baby girl floating in a rowboat, they decide to raise the lost child as their own, but they face tough moral decisions when they meet the woman (Rachel Weisz) who lost her husband and daughter at sea.

Adapted from M.L. Stedman’s bestselling novel, The Light Between Oceans is a beautifully filmed period romance that is worth seeing for the excellent performances from Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz.  This is a good drama that got somewhat overlooked last year, but it deserves to find more of an audience on Blu-ray.  For more on the film itself, you can read our three views right here.

The Blu-ray also includes commentary with director Derek Cianfrance and his film studies professor Phil Solomon, as well as the two highly worthwhile featurettes Bringing The Light to Life and Lighthouse Keeper.  The former talks about how the cast and crew actually lived on the New Zealand island during the production to authentically show the way of life and organically capture little moments between the actors, and the latter focuses on the real lighthouse used in the film.

The Light Between Oceans is a Touchstone Pictures release.  It’s 133 minutes and rated PG.
