4K Ultra HD Review: Jack Reacher (SteelBook Edition)

April 14, 2022

By John Corrado

Last week, Paramount re-released the 2012 crime thriller Jack Reacher on 4K Ultra HD, in a new limited edition SteelBook package.

In terms of actual content, this release is identical to the 4K set put out in 2018 (reviewed here). The main upgrade is the SteelBook packaging, which is very sleek, with an image of the film’s star Tom Cruise on the front against a dark background with some embers, and the title in bright red over him.

The back of the case features a quote from the film (“You think I’m a hero? I am not a hero, and if you’re smart, that scares you, because I have nothing to lose”), and an image of Cruise beside the red car used in the film’s showcase chase sequence on the inside.

Based on one of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, the film is directed by Cruise’s frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie (who re-teamed with the actor on the last two Mission: Impossible films, and is also doing the upcoming seventh and eighth instalments), and offers a decent mix of crime procedural and action movie. It’s topped off by Cruise doing his own stunts, and the film also features some strong cinematography by Caleb Deschanel (who shot it on 35mm film).

While this release doesn’t really offer any new features for a 10th anniversary edition, the new SteelBook packaging should be enough of an upgrade for fans of the film or physical media collectors.

Bonus Features (4K Ultra HD):

The 4K disc includes the two separate commentary tracks from the earlier release, and the set comes with a regular Blu-ray that holds the three previously released featurettes as well. A code for a digital copy is also included in the package.

4K and Blu-ray:

Commentary by Tom Cruise and Director Christopher McQuarrie

Commentary by Composer Joe Kraemer

Blu-ray Only:

When the Man Comes Around (26 minutes, 49 seconds)

You Do Not Mess With Jack Reacher: Combat & Weapons (10 minutes, 27 seconds)

The Reacher Phenomenon (11 minutes, 10 seconds)

Jack Reacher (SteelBook Edition) is a Paramount Home Entertainment release. It’s 130 minutes and rated 14A.

Street Date: April 5th, 2022
