4K Ultra HD Review: Mean Girls (2004): 20th Anniversary Edition

April 30, 2024

By John Corrado

The high school comedy Mean Girls was released in theatres exactly twenty years ago today on April 30th, 2004, and Paramount is marking the occasion by releasing the film for the first time on 4K Ultra HD, in a brand new 20th anniversary edition.

The film, which just received a musical remake earlier this year (also being released on 4K today via Paramount), still holds up quite well, with Tina Fey’s iconic script offering a sharply satirical portrait of high school cliques.

Fey’s writing is a big part of why Mean Girls has aged so well over the past two decades, in addition to the fine comic performances of Lindsay Lohan as former home schooler Cady Heron, and a pitch perfect Rachel McAdams as head “mean girl” Regina George.

The dialogue, performances and iconic characters (including an up-and-coming Amanda Seyfried stealing scenes as the ditziest member of the group), have made Mean Girls an indisputable modern classic. The 4K transfer offers a visually appealing upgrade, while still retaining enough of a nice, filmic look to it. If there’s only one new featurette, it’s still a solid new edition for fans of the film.

Bonus Features (4K Ultra HD):

The 4K disc includes a new featurette, as well as all of the legacy bonus content from the previous Blu-ray releases (listed below).
