Searchlight Pictures has just released the full “official trailer” for A Complete Unknown, director James Mangold’s (Walk the Line) upcoming biopic of Bob Dylan starring Timothée Chalamet. The film charts his rise from folk singer in New York’s Greenwich Village to infamously “going electric,” as we see a bit in this trailer (the first half is set to “Girl From the North Country,” which then goes into “Like a Rolling Stone”).
As a fan of Dylan, I remain intrigued by this project, and look forward to seeing the finished film. In addition to Chalamet, the cast includes Edward Norton as Pete Seeger and Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash (who was played by Joaquin Phoenix in Mangold’s Walk the Line). This new trailer also gives us bigger glimpses at Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez and Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo. At least from the trailer, Mangold seems to have authentically captured this period in time.
Chalamet seems like a shoo-in for a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Dylan, including doing his own singing. I’m quite impressed by what’s been shown of his performance so far, especially how he seems to have nailed the voice and mannerisms. The film opens in theatres on Christmas Day.
