Theatrical Releases:

Send Help (Wide Release): Sam Raimi goes back to his roots with this enjoyable mix of gnarly survival thriller, horror movie, and exploration of shifting power dynamics. It’s essentially a two-handed between Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, who star as a shy employee and her asshole boss who get stranded together on a desert island following a plane crash. I had fun with this one when I saw it at an early screening last week. Raimi finds the right balance between laughs, squirms, and jump scares, delivering a fun little January flick. (Full Review)

Arco (Limited Release): This French film is up for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. It follows a boy named Arco from the distant future, who accidentally travels back in time to 2075. It’s an enjoyable and colourfully animated mix of sci-fi adventure and environmental fable. Dubbed in English with an all-star voice cast, including producer Natalie Portman. (Full Review)

Atropia (Limited Release): This Iraq War satire, which was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at last year’s Sundance, is set in a training camp for American soldiers who interact with actors to simulate being in a war zone. Alia Shawkat stars as one of the cast members, who falls for a soldier (Callum Turner). It’s pretty good. (Full Review)
