Criterion Release: The Red Shoes
On July 27th, the 1948 classic The Red Shoes was released to The Criterion Collection. Directed by Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, this story of a star ballerina torn between two loves, is one of the most stunning Technicolor films of the 1940’s. This award-winning 2009 digital restoration is bright and crisp – and it would look especially glorious on Blu-ray.
Like other Criterion releases, the pristine presentation and bounty of bonus features make this a definitive release of The Red Shoes. With upcoming releases including Breathless (Sep. 14th), Charade (Sep. 21st), The Darjeeling Limited (Oct. 12th), and Modern Times (Nov. 16th), it’s been a great year for Criterion.
The two-disc set comes packed with audio commentaries, interviews and documentaries on the film. Also inside the case is a wonderful 24-page book on the history and restoration of the film.
