Blu-ray Release: The Birdcage
Two weeks ago, MGM released the classic 1996 comedy The Birdcage for the first time on Blu-ray. Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) is the owner of a cabaret nightclub, with his partner Albert (Nathan Lane) as the star performer.
But when their son Val (Dan Futterman) announces his engagement to Barbara (Calista Flockhart), the daughter of Republican Senator Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman) and his traditional wife (Dianne Wiest), his parents have to play it straight for her strictly conservative family.
Directed by Mike Nichols, with a hilarious cast that includes Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in top form, The Birdcage plays as a classic farce and still delivers plenty of big laughs after nearly twenty years. With beautiful cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki, the film looks good on Blu-ray, and this new edition arrives just in time for WorldPride in Toronto.
The Blu-ray also includes the original trailer.
The Birdcage is 119 minutes and rated 14A.
