New releases for the week of June 5th, 2026.

Theatrical Releases:
Scary Movie (Wide Release): This sixth film in the Scary Movie franchise serves as a soft reboot, with the Wayans brothers at the helm for the first time since the first two. They are trying to recapture the earlier magic of the spoof movie genre by parodying a decade of horror, with Regina Hall and Anna Faris reprising their roles from the previous films. I went to see this one yesterday, and some of the jokes do land, but I also wish the joke to laugh ratio was just a little bit higher. Still, it delivers enough of the stupid humour that fans of the series who will show up in droves this weekend want. It’s dumb fun, high on the dumb. (Review coming soon!)
Masters of the Universe (Wide Release): Director Travis Knight’s live-action He-Man and the Masters of the Universe reboot stars Nicholas Galitzine in the role of He-Man, who returns to his home planet of Eternia to save it from the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto). It’s fun for the most part, with Galitzine doing a decent job in the role and Leto stealing scenes as the diva villain, but also feels far too long at 141 minutes. For the fans. (Full Review)
Power Ballad (Wide Release): This latest music drama from Irish filmmaker John Carney (Once, Begin Again, Sing Street, Flora & Son) follows a wedding singer (Paul Rudd) in Ireland who has his song stolen by a former boy band singer (Nick Jonas). I really enjoyed this one. Carney knows how to craft an immensely satisfying film, and Rudd’s performance carries it along. (Full Review)
Carolina Caroline (Limited Release): Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner star in this Bonnie and Clyde tribute, which follows a young woman from a small town on the run with a con man. I saw this one at TIFF last year, and it’s a very enjoyable mix of crime picture and road movie, built around a pair of solid performances from Weaving and Gallner. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto this week, before expanding on June 12th. (TIFF 2025 Review)
