By John Corrado

New releases for the week of July 3rd, 2026.

Penélope Cruz and Olivia Wilde in The Invite

Theatrical Releases:

The Invite (Limited Release): This A24 comedy is Olivia Wilde’s third directorial effort, and also her best work yet as both a director and actor. The film is a chamber piece that unfolds over one night, following a married couple (Wilde and Seth Rogen) who invite their upstairs neighbours (Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton) into their apartment for dinner. I was a big fan of this one. The writing is sharp and perceptive in how it probes these relationships, the performances from all four actors are excellent, and it’s frequently laugh-out-loud funny. Opens in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, before expanding next week. (Full Review)

Minions & Monsters (Wide Release): I’m hearing that this latest animated movie in Illumination’s hugely profitable Despicable Me and Minions franchise is actually an homage to Old Hollywood, turning the little yellow guys who speak gibberish into filmmakers trying to navigate the change to talkies by summoning monsters. The reviews are quite solid, especially for this series. I’m actually pretty excited to check this one out soon. (Review coming soon!)
