New This Week (07/31/2026): Spider-Man: Brand New Day, & More!

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of July 31st, 2026.

Theatrical Releases:

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Wide Release): Tom Holland’s Spidey is back in this follow-up to 2021’s massive hit Spider-Man: No Way Home. I just saw it yesterday and you can count me as a fan. This sequel finds a way to follow up No Way Home by exploring the aftermath and emotional fallout from it, balancing personal character stakes with exciting action sequences. It’s all tied together by one of Tom Holland’s best performances yet, bringing depth and emotional weight to his portrayal of Peter Parker and Spider-Man. It’s already shaping up to be a massive box office hit. (Review coming soon!)

I Want Your Sex (Limited Release): Indie filmmaker Gregg Araki returns with this mix of high camp sex comedy and satirical commentary, following a modern artist (Olivia Wilde) who turns her new gallery hire (Cooper Hoffman) into her much younger sexual muse. I really enjoyed this one. It’s edgy and a lot of fun, while also feeling provocative in a way that a lot of films now don’t. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto. (Full Review)

Sheep in the Box (Limited Release): This latest from Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda follows a couple (Haruka Ayase and Daigo Yamamoto) who adopt a humanoid robot boy (Rimu Kuwaki) to fill the void left by their deceased son. I found this to be a more minor effort from Kore-eda, with the film feeling tonally uneven at times. But, as I noted in my review, a minor effort from him is still one with enough artistic and humanistic value to recommend. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto. (Full Review)

More Releases: A Sad and Beautiful World (TIFF Lightbox)
