Criterion Release: On The Waterfront
Elia Kazan’s definitive 1954 classic On The Waterfront is being released on Blu-ray & DVD today, as part of the Criterion Collection. Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) is an ex-prizefighter living in a town where the docks are run by the corrupt mob boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb). When a man is killed and Terry falls in love with the victim’s sister (Eva Marie Saint), he is faced with a moral crisis of where his allegiances lie, as the wise Father Barry (Karl Malden) tries to convince him to help take back the docks.
From the brilliant screenplay by Budd Schulberg that includes unforgettable dialogue, and the equally memorable performances led by Marlon Brando in a stunning role, On The Waterfront still feels just as relevant. The film won eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, and it remains a powerful story about trying to break away from the ties of where you come from.
The Blu-ray includes the film in both widescreen and fullscreen aspect ratios, as well as commentary with authors Richard Schickel and Jeff Young. Also included are interviews and documentaries on all aspects of the production, and a booklet featuring essays and articles about the film. The beautifully packaged set is highly recommended.
On The Waterfront is 108 minutes and rated PG.
