When Billy (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Owen Wilson) are laid off from their job selling watches, the two salesmen land themselves a summer internship at the Google headquarters, despite the fact that they know practically nothing about technology.  Under the strict guidance of supervisor Mr. Chetty (Aasif Mandvi), they find themselves competing in a “mental Hunger Games” with the other interns fighting for a job, teaming up with a group of much younger nerds led by the excitable Lyle (Josh Brener).

Although the plot often follows a predictable path, The Internship is an eager to please comedy that coasts by on genuine likability and good direction from the reliable Shawn Levy.  The set pieces are fun and provide amusement throughout, ranging from a Quidditch match to a raucous night at the club, and a last act that is actually satisfying.  Carried by a pair of charming performances from Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, The Internship is an appealing film that works as an enjoyable diversion.

The Blu-ray includes an unrated cut of the film, deleted scenes and commentary with Shawn Levy.

Starring Vince Vaughan as Billy, and Owen Wilson as Nick, The Internship is a fun comedy about two salesmen who lose their job and take an internship at Google, having to compete against high-achieving tech students half their age for one of the coveted jobs.

The film largely works because of the two leads, who play both likeable and genuinely funny characters, and the rest of the cast play off of them well.  While it isn’t the most unique film in terms of writing, it works for what it is, and provides for some fun entertainment on DVD.

The Internship is a funny and light comedy about friendship.  Two middle age salesman, Billy (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Owen Wilson) lose their jobs as watch salesman, since the watch company closed down.  After all, people don’t use watches, they just check their cellphones.  Nick tries working at a mattress store where his brother-in-law (Will Ferrell) works, but he is quickly bored with that job.  So Billy signs the two of them up for an internship at Google.  Google’s campus is fun, a cross between a college and an indoor playground.

These guys are misfits though; they can barely work a computer, and at 40-something, are old enough to be parents of their fellow interns.  As the interns join up in teams, these oldtimers wind up with the nerds, sort of like Monsters University‘s Oozma Kappa, except they are even misfits among the others.  This Oozma Kappa-type group keeps failing to the popular kids.  But the nerd kids and the boomer duo work well together, and it is their differences that allow them to succeed.

The Internship is funny, charming and sweet.  Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are entertaining as usual.  The nerds are also quite likeable, ranging from a trash talking but insecure girl (Tiya Sircar), a trichtillomaniac former homeschooling overachiever (Tobit Rapheal) and a couple of other shy guys.  The campus, challenging but fun competitions and nerds vs. popular kids works well, and inevitably seems very Monsters University, although this film is different enough to not be a copy.

While The Internship is nothing brilliant or original, this is still a fun, harmless comedy that will appeal to nerds and nerd lovers everywhere.

Google the word “noogle” and you’ll have a good idea what The Internship is all about.  This lighthearted comedy directed by Shawn Levy centres around two out of work, middle-aged salesman who look at Google’s internship program as both their last hope and a chance at a whole new world.

Billy McMahon (Vince Vaughn) and Nick Campbell (Owen Wilson) are not exactly technophobes, but they have spent the last few years selling luxury analog watches to rich executives.  When their boss (John Goodman) folds the company, the tag-team sales duo are left scrambling.  Through a Google search for employment opportunities, they come across Google’s own recruitment page and discover their internship program.

Much of the humour comes from Billy and Nick seeming so out of sync with all the other recruits, nerdy college and university grads with tons of technical skills that offset their lesser social skills.  It’s a case of oldtimers vs. brainy nerds.  Forced to form teams, they end up with four misfits, Lyle (Josh Brener), Stuart (Dylan OBrien), Neha (Tiya Sircar) and Yo-Yo Santos (Tobit Rapheal) who end up benefitting from an older point of view and an old school approach to problem solving.  It’s up to the team to impress the games coordinator, the not so friendly Mr. Chetty (Aasif Mandvi).  The outcome of The Internship is fairly predictable.

The strength of this movie lies in the always fun to watch comedic pairing of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.  These two are charming together.  While not a brilliant movie, The Internship offers plenty of lighthearted and “Googly” entertainment.

The Internship features the crack sales team of Billy and Nick (Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson), who suddenly find themselves unemployed when their boss (John Goodman) sells out his wristwatch business for “a condo in Miami Beach [and] tits for the wife.” Despite their ages and lack of conventional qualifications, they manage to charm their way into Google for a summer internship. The interns are divided into teams for competition in various challenges, from which only one team will emerge with job offers at the end. Naturally, Billy and Nick end up on the underdog team of misfits, whose unique combination of skill sets (as in Malcolm Gladwell’s latest David And Goliath book) may have just what it takes to prevail.

Incidentally, though The Internship was mostly shot at Georgia Tech, and Google has issued a disclaimer about the depiction of its hiring practices, they did permit five days of shooting at the Googleplex with employees as extras. Admittedly not as good as the two films to which it can be compared: Wedding Crashers (leads) and Monsters University (storyline), and rather predictable with stereotypical characters and gags, the witty script and cast directed by Shawn Levy have produced a very enjoyable film that moves along with lots of laughs toward a nice conclusion.

Consensus: Although the story is fairly predictable, The Internship is a lighthearted and enjoyable comedy from director Shawn Levy, carried by charming performances from Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.  **3/4 (Out of 4)
