The first full length trailer has finally been unveiled for Digger, the new dark comedy from Alejandro G. Iñárritu, starring Tom Cruise. This is our first full look at Cruise’s transformation, which involves old man makeup and a Southern accent, in what is being set up as a chance for the movie star to finally win his first Oscar.

And this looks to be quite an entertaining performance from him. Cruise appears to be giving it his all playing an aging oil tycoon named Digger Rockwell, with the role allowing him to go big (think Tropic Thunder), as his character faces down environmental disaster. We also get our first glimpses at other members of the ensemble cast, including Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed and Jesse Plemons, as well as John Goodman playing the president.

I’m intrigued by everything about this one. The film looks bonkers, a gigantic satire that has hints of both Iñárritu’s 2014 Best Picture winner Birdman and Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. What we see in this trailer certainly isn’t lacking in terms of ambition. It was shot in VistaVision by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, and being released in IMAX.

The film opens exclusively in theatres on October 2nd. This trailer is timed to play before Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey later this week.
