4K Ultra HD Review: Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection
By John Corrado
With September 8th marking the anniversary of when Star Trek first aired on CBS in 1966, Paramount is dipping back into the archives this month with the release of Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection, featuring the first half-dozen films in the franchise in 4K Ultra HD.
Starting with director Robert Wise’s 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture, this set builds upon the 4-Movie Collection that was released this time last year, to include the fifth and sixth films Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country for the first time in 4K as well.
They, of course, join the previously released 4K/HDR transfers of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Notably, along with the theatrical cuts of all six films, this set also includes the newly remastered version of Wise’s The Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which was previously only available in standard definition via its 2001 DVD release. We also get the director’s cuts of The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country, which is also making its 4K debut.
In total, the 6-Movie Collection offers six movies and nine cuts spread across fifteen discs. It’s a pretty hefty set; the discs are held in two separate plastic snap cases (one for the 4K discs and the other for the regular Blu-rays that are bundled as well), which are housed in a cardboard outer box. I understand the frustration of those who already picked up last year’s set, but this is the more complete collection.
For serious collectors, Paramount has also put out standalone 4K editions of these six films this month featuring new cover art, along with a special collector’s edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition dubbed The Complete Adventure, that features deluxe packaging and a number of other goodies including the Special Longer Version that aired on TV in 1983 (reviewed here).
Bonus Features (4K Ultra HD):
The set includes a number of new and legacy bonus features spread across the fifteen discs, adding up to several hours of content in total. Codes for digital copies are also included in the package, as well as a note from Wise about The Director’s Edition and getting to revisit the film.
