4K Ultra HD Review: Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection
By John Corrado
September 8th marks the 55th anniversary of when Star Trek first premiered on television screens in 1966, with Gene Roddenberry’s classic sci-fi series launching a still-going franchise spanning TV series and movies.
In honour of the occasion, Paramount is releasing Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection on 4K Ultra HD this week, a new box set featuring the first four Star Trek films newly remastered in 4K from original elements.
The films included in the set are the original Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) with its iconic Jerry Goldsmith score, the fan favourite sequel Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), both directed by the late Spock actor Leonard Nimoy.
The set notable features both the theatrical and director’s cut of The Wrath of Khan, which is considered by many to be the best film in the series. In addition to the 4K Ultra HD discs which are presented with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, the set includes regular Blu-ray discs of all four films as well. The 4K and Blu-ray discs are each housed in their own plastic keep cases, both of which are slipped inside a white cardboard outer box, which features some attractive, illustrated cover art.
Bonus Features (4K Ultra HD):
The discs each feature a selection of previously released bonus features, adding up to hours of material in total. Digital copy codes for the theatrical versions of all four films are also included in the package.
