New This Week (04/21/2023): Beau Is Afraid, Ghosted, & More!
New releases for the week of April 21st, 2023.
Theatrical Releases:
Beau Is Afraid (Wide Release): This wildly ambitious, three-hour third film from writer-director Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) stars Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role of the perpetually nervous Beau, who embarks on an increasingly bizarre, surrealist odyssey to reconnect with his mother (Patti LuPone). I admired the his one when I saw it last week (I really liked the first act, it lost me slightly in the midsection, but the whole ending was very strong), though I feel like I need another viewing to fully absorb it all. Still, it’s a big swing from Aster that should be applauded, and it’s guided along by an excellent Phoenix. (Full Review)
More Releases: Joyland (TIFF Bell Lightbox), The Last Film Show (Limited), Evil Dead Rise (Wide), Chevalier (Limited), Bystanders (Limited), Midnight at the Paradise (Limited), Little Richard: I Am Everything (Limited), To Catch a Killer (Limited), Stellar (Limited)
Streaming Releases:
Ghosted (Apple TV+): Chris Evans and Ana de Armas stars in this romantic action comedy from director Dexter Fletcher, which follows a man who discovers that his new date is actually a secret agent, and gets swept away on an international adventure when he tries to pursue her. Reviews are not good and it honestly looks like a very mediocre streaming movie, but I may check it out for the two leads.
More Releases: Judy Blume Forever (Prime Video), A Tourist’s Guide to Love (Netflix)
