New releases for the week of April 24th, 2026.

Theatrical Releases:
Michael (Wide Release): The long-hyped Michael Jackson biopic from director Antoine Fuqua is finally arriving in theatres. It’s got a surprisingly low Rotten Tomatoes score (only 40% at the time of this writing), but I found it to be entertaining as a music-driven crowdpleaser. Yes, it’s a generic biopic that sanitizes Jackson’s story. But it features strong performances from Michael’s real life nephew Jaafar Jackson, who embodies his uncle, and Colman Domingo as his abusive father, and the concert scenes deliver. (Full Review)
Mother Mary (Limited Release): David Lowery (A Ghost Story, The Green Knight) crafts what might be his biggest swing with this mix of pop star melodrama and stealth horror movie, starring Anne Hathaway as the titular pop star and Michaela Coel as her former costume designer. It will be divisive, but it’s carried by captivating performances from Hathaway and Coel, and is ambitious enough to be another interesting statement from Lowery. (Full Review)
I Swear (Limited Release): This British biographical drama received a lot of attention when Robert Aramayo won the BAFTA for his performance. Aramayo stars in the film as John Davidson, a man living with Tourette’s syndrome, who has devoted his life to helping bring awareness to the neurological disorder. This is one of the better films I saw at TIFF last year. It’s a crowdpleaser that manages to be entertaining, heartbreaking, and inspirational, while offering an incredibly authentic portrait of Tourette’s. (TIFF 2025 Review)
Erupcja (Limited Release): Charli XCX stars in this indie travelogue as a young British woman in Poland with her boyfriend (Will Madden), who sneaks away to spend time with an old friend (Lena Góra). It’s a relatively slight film, but it’s kept engaging and enjoyable thanks to the performances and short 71 minute running time. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto. (Full Review)
