Theatrical Releases:

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (Wide Release): This twenty years later sequel to the 2006 modern classic, which scored Meryl Streep an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, finds former assistant Andy Sacks (Anne Hathaway) returning to her job. I reviewed this one the other day, and found it to be a very enjoyable and satisfying legacy sequel. The story feels like a natural progression as it grapples with some deeper themes about the end of the print magazine industry, while still delivering the fun escapism that we want. It’s also great to see the cast back in these iconic roles, including scene-stealers Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt. (Full Review)

Hokum (Wide Release): Adam Scott stars in this NEON horror film as an American author who travels to a hotel in Ireland to scatter the ashes of his late parents, but finds that things aren’t quite right at the once-idyllic hotel. Writer-director Damian McCarthy delivers a mix of slow-burn tension and jump scares, with some Irish folklore worked in. I saw this one last week and thought it was pretty good. It’s pretty derivative of Stephen King (right down to the trope of an alcoholic author at a creepy hotel), and either plays as tribute or copy depending on your vantage point. But it boasts a decent Adam Scott performance and a creepy atmosphere.
