New releases for the week of May 8th, 2026.

Theatrical Releases:
Obsession (Wide Release): This horror film from writer-director Curry Barker got picked up by Focus Features after it screened in TIFF’s Midnight Madness section last year, and feels like it’s on the verge of becoming a breakout hit. It follows a lovelorn young man (Michael Johnston) who makes a wish on a novelty item that his crush (Inde Navarrette) would love him more than anyone in the world, causing her to become obsessed. What ensues is an entertainingly dark film, grounded by the performances of Johnston and Navarette, who shines in an unsettling, highly watchable breakout role. (Full Review)
The Wizard of the Kremlin (Limited Release): Paul Dano stars as a fictitious advisor to Russian president Vladimir Putin in this latest from French director Olivier Assayas. Putin is played by Jude Law in a magnetic supporting role. It’s a sprawling but consistently engaging mix of thriller, political drama, and even satire showing Putin’s rise to power in post-Soviet Russia, with a very good Dano performance at the centre of it. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto. (Full Review)
