Theatrical Releases:

Verity (Wide Release): This latest adaptation of a book by Colleen Hoover (It Ends With Us) stars Anne Hathaway as a bestselling author and Dakota Johnson as her ghostwriter. The inherent trashiness of this material is part of the film’s appeal. Director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) delivers a pretty entertaining throwback to the psychological thrillers of the 1990s and 2000s, embracing elements of campiness and the tawdry melodrama of Hoover’s writing, with delicious performances from Johnson and Hathaway. (Full Review)

Digger (Wide Release): This latest from Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant) is a satire starring Tom Cruise in old man makeup as an aging oil tycoon. This is shaping up to be maybe the most divisive big studio release of the year, with the reactions I’ve seen ranging from calling it brilliant to a total mess. I’m very curious to check it out for myself, and will have a review up sometime this weekend. (Review coming soon!)

You Had to Be There: How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution… (Limited Release): This entertaining documentary about the legendary 1972 Toronto run of the musical Godspell, which served as the launching pad for a number of Canadian comedy legends including Martin Short and Eugene Levy, is finally opening in theatres after premiering at TIFF last year. It’s a lot of fun for both comedy and musical theatre fans. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto. (TIFF 2025 Review)
