The Canadian Film Fest Starts Tonight

March 28, 2012

Happening at the Royal Theatre in Toronto, the Canadian Film Fest starts tonight and runs until March 31st.  With nine feature films set to be screened alongside ten shorts, the festival is run by a non-profit organization that is devoted to the celebration and discovery of unique homegrown films.  The festival launches with the premiere screening of Thom Fitzgerald’s Cloudburst.

When Dot (Brenda Fricker) is put in an old folks home, her crudely spoken life partner Stella (Olympia Dukakis) breaks her out so that they can take a road trip to Nova Scotia and tie the knot.  Along the road, they pick up a hitchhiker named Prentice (Ryan Doucette), and form a special friendship with the young slacker.  Despite a few predictable moments and a misjudged scene of over the top male nudity, Cloudburst boasts nicely developed characters believably brought to life by three strong performances, beautiful scenery and a bittersweet heart at the centre of the story.

Those looking to discover unique little Canadian films should check out the Canadian Film Fest over the next few days.  You can get all of the information that you need and purchase tickets right here.
