The Nominations for the 70th Annual Golden Globes

December 13, 2012

Golden GlobesThe nominations for the 70th annual Golden Globes were announced this morning, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has given lots of love to everything from Argo to Zero Dark Thirty, as Lincoln leads the pack with a total of seven nominations.

The five films in the running for Best Picture – Drama are Argo (five nominations), Django Unchained (five), Life of Pi (three), Lincoln (seven) and Zero Dark Thirty (four).  The line up for Best Picture – Comedy or Musical includes The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (two nominations), Les Miserables (four), Moonrise Kingdom (one), Salmon Fishing in the Yemen  (three) and Silver Linings Playbook (four).  The nominees for Best Director are Ben Affleck (Argo), Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Steven Spielberg (Lincoln) and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained).

There are a few unfortunate choices like Robert De Niro being left out of the supporting field for Silver Linings Playbook and David O. Russell missing out on a Best Director nod for the same film in an already packed line up of deserving nominees.  The supporting nom that Nicole Kidman got for The Paperboy is probably the first time that an actress has been recognized for a role that required them to urinate on Zac Efron.  But I’m also quite happy with a lot of the nominations, including John Hawkes and Helen Hunt picking up much deserved acting nods for The Sessions, along with Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams all being recognized for their great work in The Master.

I also support all ten films in the running in the two Best Picture fields, and it’s nice to see a nomination for Moonrise Kingdom even if it is the only nod that the film received.  For the most part, the six acting categories are also strong, and I’m happy to see that both Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence were recognized for Silver Linings Playbook.  I don’t have much to add on the TV side of things, but it’s nice to see Zooey Deschanel get an acting nom for her excellent work on New Girl even though the great show unfortunately continues to be left out of a Best Series – Comedy or Musical nomination.

That’s pretty much all of the commentary I have to add at the moment, and it will be interesting to see the comparisons when the Academy Awards nominations come out on January 10th in 2013.  The Golden Globe winners will be announced on January 13th in the new year, at a ceremony hosted by the hilarious duo of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.  The TV noms can be seen here, and we have included the complete list of nominees in all of the film categories after the break.
