November 1, 2022

By John Corrado

Please note that this is a review of the 4K Ultra HD release of Top Gun: Maverick. For my full thoughts on the film itself, you can read my original theatrical review right here.

It’s the biggest movie of the year so far, and now Top Gun: Maverick is arriving on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray this week from Paramount Home Entertainment.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the legacy sequel sees the triumphant return of fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise), who is brought back to train a group of new recruits in the Top Gun flight school, including Rooster (Miles Teller), the son of his former wingman Goose.

Exceeding all possible expectations as a follow up to Tony Scott’s classic 1986 film, Top Gun: Maverick is a thrilling blockbuster that is also legitimately one of the best movies of the year. Tom Cruise said he was going to save cinema with this film, and he actually did it, delivering a massive box office hit that was praised by critics and audiences alike.

While this is a film that was made for the big screen, the 4K presentation presents the best possible viewing option to watch it at home. The 2160p resolution offers incredible clarity, especially during the terrific flight sequences, including closeups on the actor’s faces in the cockpits. After grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide, Top Gun: Maverick is set to enjoy a long shelf life out of theatres as an instant classic, and one of the finest movies of 2022.

Film Rating: ★★★½ (out of 4)

Bonus Features (4K Ultra HD):

The 4K disc comes with a healthy amount of bonus features, boasting “over 80 minutes” of material in total, including four featurettes, two music videos, and one conversation with Tom Cruise. A code for a digital copy is also included in the package, which ships with a slipcover.

Cleared for Take Off (9 minutes, 15 seconds): A look at the intense flight training that the actors had to go through so that they could really fly the F-18s used in the film, with Cruise wanting to do all the flight sequences practically. It paid off.

Breaking New Ground (7 minutes, 56 seconds): Cruise talks about the importance of shooting all of the flight sequences practically, including working with the Navy to figure out how to fit cameras into the cockpits of the F-18s, in this fascinating look at the film’s groundbreaking cinematography.

A Love Letter to Aviation (4 minutes, 48 seconds): Cruise and members of the cast and crew discuss the actor’s real life love of aviation, including using his own P-51 Mustang in the film.

Forging the Darkstar (7 minutes, 31 seconds): A look at the process of working with the Skunk Works division of Lockheed Martin to design the experimental fighter jet that Maverick takes up to Mach 10 in the thrilling opening sequence.

Masterclass with Tom Cruise – Cannes Film Festival (49 minutes, 4 seconds): Cruise sits down for an enjoyable discussion of his career, touching on his love of movies, doing his own stunts, and the importance of movie theatres. Recorded at this year’s Cannes, it offers more proof that he is our last true movie star.

“Hold My Hand” – Lady Gaga Music Video (3 minutes, 52 seconds)

“I Ain’t Worried” – OneRepublic Music Video (2 minutes, 37 seconds)
