4K Ultra HD Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation 4-Movie Collection
By John Corrado
This week, Paramount is releasing Star Trek: The Next Generation 4-Movie Collection on 4K Ultra HD, including the films Star Trek: Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), Star Trek: Nemesis (2002).
These four films serve as a continuation of the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation (which ran from 1987 to 1994), with the underrated and surprisingly bittersweet film Generations acting as a passing of the torch between Enterprise captains James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart).
For my money, these are all decent to solid films that play well together back-to-back, which is how I watched them for review. Together, they serve to complete the saga of Picard, along with humanoid android Data (Brent Spiner), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes, who also directed First Contact and Insurrection) and the rest of TNG‘s crew.
The biggest selling point of this set is the quality of the 4K transfers themselves. The 2160p presentation is excellent across each of the four films, offering increased clarity on skin tones (including Data’s face makeup), uniforms, and ship interiors, while still retaining a natural, filmic grain. The HDR (with both HDR-10 and Dolby Vision) allows for sharper colours and deeper blacks, starting with the inky depths of space during the opening credits sequence of Generations. While we can see the advances in technology and visual effects between the films, this is the best they have looked since theatres.
The set serves as a companion to Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection released last year, including matching cover artwork. The set’s eight discs (four 4K and four remastered Blu-rays) are all held in a black plastic snap case, which slips into an outer cardboard box. Paramount has also released standalone 4K editions of all four of these films as well. The entertainment value of the films, coupled with the excellent 4K presentations, make this a satisfying collection for fans.
Bonus Features (4K Ultra HD):
The 8-disc set includes a bevy of legacy bonus content spread across the discs, with most of the bonus materials found on the Blu-rays. Digital copy codes for all four films are also included in the package.
