Theatrical Releases:
Disclosure Day (Wide Release): This latest blockbuster from Steven Spielberg finds the legendary filmmaker returning to his sci-fi roots. It’s a story about aliens, centred around a whistleblower (Josh O’Connor) trying to reveal their existence to the world. I just saw this one yesterday, and was a big fan. I found it to be a gripping film filled with mystery, intrigue, and suspense, with Spielberg masterfully building to a finale that delivers pure cinematic wonder. The film is topped off with another great John Williams score, and excellent performances, including from Emily Blunt as a weather reporter who gets caught up in the conspiracy. Some of the reactions have been mixed, but I’m firmly in the “pro” camp on this one. (Review coming soon!)
Stop! That! Train! (Wide Release): RuPaul produces and Adam Shankman (Hairspray) directs this disaster movie spoof starring drag queens Ginger Minj and Jujubee as stewardesses aboard a train heading towards a storm. It’s a proudly stupid, gag-a-minute comedy that works best if you just turn your brain off and enjoy. Enough of the jokes land for it to be pretty amusing – if a little uneven – overall. (Full Review)
The Furious (Wide Release): This Hong Kong action flick from director Kenji Tanigaki is arriving in theatres after premiering in TIFF’s Midnight Madness section last year. Set “somewhere in Southeast Asia” as the title card tells us, it follows Wang Wei (Xie Miao), a mute tradesman whose daughter (Yang Enyou) is kidnapped, sending him on a mission to rescue her from a notorious child trafficking ring. The film is presented mostly in English, including some awkward dubbing, which adds to the B-movie charm and aesthetic. The brutal fight scenes and relentlessly paced action are the reason to see this one, including multiple extended and creatively choreographed set-pieces. Fans of martial arts cinema are in for a treat.
