After becoming a surprise box office sensation at the start of the summer, director Curry Barker’s breakout horror movie Obsession is now getting a physical media release, including on 4K Ultra HD.
The film follows the lonely Bear (Michael Johnston), who uses a “One Wish Willow” to wish that his crush Nikki (Inde Navarrette) would love him “more than anyone in the world,” causing her to become obsessed with him.
The success of this one going from a modest $750 thousand budget – and a Midnight Madness premiere at last year’s TIFF – to grossing over $400 million dollars worldwide (including historic increases weekend after weekend), will be studied for years to come.
Nobody could’ve predicted just how big this movie would become, with Obsession turning into one of the most popular and talked about films of the year (and a surprise Oscar contender), thanks to both its clever premise and Navarrette’s instantly iconic breakout performance. If you haven’t watched it yet, now is your chance. The 4K Ultra HD disc offers the best way to watch the film at home, and is well-suited for the film’s dark colour palate.

The 4K disc includes a nearly twenty minute featurette on the production as well as a commentary track. A regular Blu-ray disc is also included in the package, which ships with a glossy slipcover.
• Obsession Unleashed (19 minutes, 13 seconds): A solid and entertaining featurette that allows Barker and his four main cast members to talk about their performances and characters, and share some tidbits from the scrappy twenty day shoot. There is a lot of focus on Navarrette’s performance, and how unnerving it was for everyone to see it live on set. They also share memories from the first screening. It’s an enjoyable piece to watch after the film.
