First Trailer for Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning

By John Corrado

The first trailer has been unveiled for The Social Reckoning, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s “companion piece” to 2010 film The Social Network. Sorkin is also directing this time around, taking over from David Fincher, while Jeremy Strong is taking over from Jessie Eisenberg in the role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

This film focuses on Facebook engineer turned whistleblower Frances Haugen, who is played by Anora Oscar-winner Mikey Madison. The trailer opens with her being interviewed by Wall Street Journal tech reporter Jeff Horwitz, who is played by Jeremy Allen White. We also get glimpses at Strong’s portrayal of Zuckerberg, which appears to be a near-uncanny impersonation from the method actor.

Despite having a different cast, this is very much being sold as a sequel to The Social Network. The trailer even uses music from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s Oscar-winning score (“Hand Covers Bruise”). I’m intrigued by the themes and cast, and The Social Network itself remains one of the most prescient films of the century, but I wonder if this follow-up will suffer not having Fincher at the helm? I’m holding out hope that Sorkin can deliver.

The film opens exclusively in theatres on October 9th.
