New releases for the week of August 14th, 2026.

Theatrical Releases:

Tony (Limited Release): Fresh off the breakout success of his Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson directs this Anthony Bourdain biopic for A24, which unfolds over one summer in the young chef’s life. Dominic Sessa is excellent in the 1970s-set film as a young Bourdain, with Antonio Banderas doing soulful supporting work as his mentor. I really enjoyed this one. Expands August 21st. (Full Review)

The End of Oak Street (Wide Release): Director David Robert Mitchell (It Follows, Under the Silver Lake) makes his long-awaited return to the big screen with this 1980s throwback adventure. It stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as parents whose suburban home gets transported back to prehistoric times, complete with dinosaurs. I’m looking forward to checking it out this weekend. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (Limited Release): Jane Schoenbrun’s third film is a tribute to 1980s summer camp slashers, channelled through a queer, meta lens. Hannah Einbinder stars as a young filmmaker hired to reboot the Camp Miasma franchise, with Gillian Anderson portraying the original “final girl.” It’s stylish, often mesmerizing stuff, with a tone that can be both haunting and surprisingly playful. The Rivals of Amziah King (Limited Release): Director Andrew Patterson’s ambitious sophomore feature could best be described as a hangout movie about musical beekeepers by way of a dark Southern crime drama. Matthew McConaughey stars as the titular Amziah King, who runs a honey business in rural Oklahoma and has a passion for bluegrass music. The film is frequently compelling to watch as it keeps shifting genres, including several vibrant musical numbers. See it cold for the best experience. (Full Review)
