Criterion Release: A Brief History of Time
Last week, the classic 1991 documentary A Brief History of Time was released on Blu-ray & DVD as part of the Criterion Collection. Based on his bestselling 1988 book of the same name, the film focuses on the life of brilliant astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, shedding light on the debilitating motor neurone disease that has left him paralyzed, while also presenting some of his most famous theories about the origins of the universe.
Directed by acclaimed documentarian Errol Morris, and featuring captivatingly minimalistic music from Philip Glass, A Brief History of Time is a good film that uses the life of Stephen Hawking as a backdrop to explore some of the most profound questions ever asked. More than twenty years after winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, the documentary still provides an intriguing look into one of the greatest minds of our time.
The Blu-ray includes extended interviews with Errol Morris and cinematographer John Bailey. The film is packaged with a booklet that has an essay by critic David Sterritt and excerpts from two of Stephen Hawking’s books.
A Brief History of Time is 84 minutes and rated PG.
