After winning the Oscar for Best Documentary Short, The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life is opening tomorrow at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema and will be playing a few more times until May 20th, co-presented by the Toronto Jewish Film Festival.

At 109 years old, Alice Herz-Sommer was the oldest living survivor of the Holocaust, practising the piano every day a century after learning to play, attracting visitors to the nursing home who came to hear her music and stories.  Maintaining an optimistic outlook despite numerous tragedies in her past, and being spared from the death camps because of her ability to perform while knowing that millions of others weren’t so lucky, her story is a moving one that is also life affirming.

Although she sadly passed away just before the Oscars at the age of 110, Alice Herz-Sommer remains a true inspiration, and The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life is a wonderful and touching time capsule of her miraculous life story.
