New This Week (03/03/2023): The Quiet Girl, Creed III, & More!
By John Corrado
New releases for the week of March 3rd, 2023.
Theatrical Releases:
Creed III (Wide Release): Michael B. Jordan makes his directorial debut with this third film in the Rocky spinoff series, centred around Jordan’s Adonis Creed going toe-to-toe in the ring against a new adversary played by Jonathan Majors. The reviews are super solid, and I’m planning to see it soon, so will report back when I do.
The Quiet Girl (Limited Release/TIFF Bell Lightbox): The first Irish-language movie to be Oscar-nominated for Best International Feature, The Quiet Girl is a tender and poignant coming of age film that shows a painfully shy young girl (Catherine Clinch) in rural Ireland, who finally starts to open up when she is put in the care of distant relatives over the summer. It’s a thing of quiet beauty to watch unfold, building to an incredibly powerful emotional wallop of an ending. (Full Review)
More Releases: There’s Always Hope (Limited), Return to Seoul (TIFF Bell Lighbox), Queens of the Qing Dynasty (TIFF Bell Lightbox), Calendar Girls (Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema), Unseen Skies (Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema)
Streaming Releases:
Daisy Jones & The Six (Prime Video): This star-studded new mini-series is based on the Taylor Jenkins Reid book of the same name, and stars Riley Keough as the female lead singer of a fictional 1970s rock band that broke up at the height of their fame (sounds a lot like Fleetwood Mac). James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) directed the first five episodes of the series, which was created by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, with Reese Witherspoon serving as an executive producer. It looks promising. First three (of ten) episodes drop today, with the rest arriving over the next few weeks.
More Releases: The Mandalorian: Season 3 (Disney+), Love at First Kiss (Netflix), Split at the Root (Netflix), I Got a Monster (Prime Video)
