New releases for the week of October 9th, 2026.

Theatrical Releases:
Run Terry Run (Wide Release): Director Sean Menard’s very moving new documentary was one of the absolute best films I saw at TIFF this year. Assembled from 96 reels of never before seen footage from Terry Fox’s 1980 Marathon of Hope, the film lets us experience his historic run across Canada to raise money for cancer research in a new way. Elevation Pictures is giving this the biggest release for a non-concert documentary in Canada since Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004, with the film opening on over 150 screens nationwide. I highly recommend going to see it, and proceeds from the film will be going to the Terry Fox Foundation. (TIFF 2026 Review)
The Social Reckoning (Wide Release): Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s spiritual sequel to The Social Network arrives sixteen years after that modern classic, with Sorkin himself replacing David Fincher as director, and Jeremy Strong taking over from Jesse Eisenberg in the role of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White also star. The reviews are more mixed this time around, but I like Sorkin’s dialogue, so I’m looking forward to checking it out. (Review coming soon!)
California Schemin’ (Limited Release): James McAvoy’s directorial debut is based on the wild true story of Billy Boyd (Samuel Bottomley) and Gavin Bain (Séamus McLean Ross), two young guys from Scotland who passed themselves off as California rappers in the early 2000s and formed the rap duo Silibil N’ Brains. It’s a fun story, carried by the high energy performances from Bottomley and Ross. (Full Review)
